About Thalamos

Thalamos is improving MHA outcomes for individuals; enabling an end-to-end acute care pathway which is swifter, simpler and safer. Thalamos was founded by cousins Arden and Ross in 2018. Thinking there must be a kinder, and more efficient, way of assessing and treating an individual in crisis, Arden and Ross decided to investigate the possibilities of a digital solution. Thalamos is developed through personal lived experience, focus group research, clinical safety experts and consultation with our advisor and steering groups.

WHAT DOES A DIGITAL MHA LOOK LIKE?

A digital Mental Health Act (MHA) is a digital pathway, not just digital forms. It is not just about getting people into hospital, but getting them out the other side again, and avoiding readmission.

We believe a digital MHA can help deliver on the four key recommendations of the MHA Review (December 2018):

  • Choice and autonomy
  • Least restriction
  • Therapeutic benefit
  • The person as an individual

We strive to reflect the work of the review in everything that we do.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH A PAPER SYSTEM?

Operating a paper system in an increasingly digital world leads to a number of challenges. This is particularly around the speed and accuracy of communication and administration. A reliance on paper forms exposes both clinicians and patients to risk. It is increasingly accepted that a paper approach to the MHA is:

  • Slow: Physical forms must be physically delivered or posted.
  • Complicated: More than 50% of forms need amending once submitted.
  • Unsafe: Almost 500 deaths of detained patients in just 1 year (1 March 2020 – 5 March 2021).

Thalamos aims to improve Mental Health Act outcomes for individuals; enabling an end-to-end acute care pathway which is swifter, simpler and safer.
